Short Story

San Andrés Osuna is a village in Guatemala which was recently devastated by the Volcan de Fuego’s eruption in 2018.  Although its villagers were not direct victims to the eruption, access to the town has been completely obliterated, and the government of Guatemala is unwilling to mend the damaged infrastructure, due to the chances that the infrastructure might keep getting damaged due to volcano activity anyways.

A new public school was build and inaugurated in January of 2023, in San Andrés Osuna.  Ecoconomist was invited to build their first aquaponic system in this school for the community of San Andrés Osuna.  Once the aquaponic system is funded through a separate campaign to cover the project’s second month’s operating costs.  Once the first two months of the system have been covered, we hope that the system will be able to be self-sustainable using the sales made thanks to the system. These costs include concentrate (food for the fish), sprouts and chemical equipment to check on the systems status, such as ‘easy strips’ to check on the NH4 Ammonia of the system.
