Ecoconomist was formed in January 2020, by Olof Hormander, Javier Castillo, Emilda Alvarez Hormander, Paul Haase, Andrea Diez, Amerigo Moran and Selvin Avelar, with the purpose, as the NGO’s Constitution states, to develop activities, programs and projects that favour the economic and social development of families and communities in Guatemala. Article 5 of Ecoconomist’s Constitution states that Ecoconomist was legally founded to provide support to vulnerable communities in Guatemala, to better the livelihoods of families with limited resources, through the creation of programs and projects for their holistic development. Paragraph b of the same Article follows to describe the organizations legal ability to design projects that include and address direct actions towards vulnerable communities, and are in themselves self-sustainable and replicable.
Other abilities and expectations for the NGO which are stated in Ecoconomist’s mandate include designing plans and strategies that can provide the organization with the necessary tools to execute and evaluate projects implemented within the environmental, social, academic, cultural and renewable energy fields identified by the NGO. It also has the jurisdiction to carry out traininings, forums and workshops which can instruct the NGO’s associates and beneficiaries about the development and administration of projects which remain accountable to the projects the NGO has set out to accomplish. It also sets out to identify and generate strategic alliances with national and international entities to carry out the programs and projects which should be coordinated in unision.
Finally, Ecoconomist’s mandate also looks to develop aquacultural projects, as well as agricultural projects, livestock breeding projects, reforestation, renewable energy building and other sustainable projects which may be of benefit to communities in Guatemala. It also hopes the organization is able to maintain the website, along with its objectives in regards to transparency, and visual representation of the achieved objectives. Keeping as a transversal objective that to develop the empowerment of youth, women and other highly vulnerable communities of Guatemala, as well as promotion of the environmental conservation of natural resources and biodiversity in the country.
